" grace
hides in plain sight"
David
Hinske maintains working studios in Taos, NM and Memphis, TN
where his paintings are influenced by the two wildly different and
social environments. Increasingly, his work has become quieter, allowing
the paintings to reveal more
of themselves with repeating viewings.
Hinske builds up depth on his canvases through multiple layers of paint and an
extreme variety of brush and knife techniques. Paint is scraped, scrumbled, dragged
and washed, sometimes in thick gooey gobs and sometimes in delicate little single
hair bits, in a full range from heavy impasto to water thin. Although the creation
of his paintings can be frenetic and active, the finished pieces are calm, warm,
and richly textured.
He is currently working on a series he calls 'human/nature' in which abstracted
references to water and stone are used to metaphorically reflect on our well
being. The collected pieces from this series will be exhibited at Askew Nixon
Ferguson in April 2007.
Hinske's paintings are in public, private, and corporate collections across the
country. He has been a curator and a gallerist, frequently writes on the arts
for the media, has been a jurist for group exhibits, and his paintings have been
featured in designer and showcases and magazines.
