Education
MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia
BFA
in drawing and painting from the University of Memphis.
My background in painting
easily translated into the digital world. In recent years I have
become increasingly fascinated with the potential it offers for
self expression. This relatively new medium lends itself to the
contemporary yet embodies all the dynamics of traditional art such
as light, line, form, space and color. The tools of the trade have
changed from paints, canvas and an easel to a computer, software
and printer.
Working now in a digital environment my background allows a mix of
thinking when approaching an image. I still think in terms of traditional
media. I think of color in terms of paint, washes and stained canvas.
Colors are layered and built up as in a painting but they are now layered
in an electronic file for easy manipulation and change.
I find working with digital imagery an exciting approach to creating
unique works of art. Working with pixels and electronic brushes allows
experimentation and discovery of new and refreshing approaches.
The final works are printed on an Epson 9800 using ultrachrome K3 Inks
on archival quality canvas or art paper.
My list of favorite artists is far too long to list but a couple that
I think influenced and helped shape my current body of work are Wassily
Kandinski and Joan Miro. I admire their use of vibrant color and the
freedom with which each line and shape are executed in an effort to
present to the viewer an image never before seen. I love to stand in
front of their paintings and visually explore their extraordinary talent.
